Introduction & Overview
Busia District is a pivotal border district in Eastern Uganda, directly contiguous with Busia County in Kenya. The district town, Busia, is one of the busiest East African border crossings, fueling a dynamic, trade-driven economy. The district is administratively divided into Bunyole and Samia-Bugwe counties.
Geographical & Demographic Profile
Busia covers approximately 750 square kilometers, with a landscape ranging from flat plains to gentle hills. It is bordered by Lake Victoria to the South, Tororo District to the North, and Kenya to the East. The population is estimated at over 350,000, comprising mainly the Banyole and Basamia ethnic groups. Languages spoken include Lunyole, Lusamia, and English.
Economic Activities
The economy is heavily reliant on cross-border trade, with hundreds of small-scale traders operating daily. Agriculture remains the backbone, with sugarcane, rice, maize, and beans as primary crops. Fishing is significant along the lake shores. The service sector is robust, featuring hotels, logistics, money exchange, and transportation services catering to the transit population.
