Introduction & Overview
Namayingo District is a relatively young district, carved out of Busia in 2010. It is situated on the northern shores of Lake Victoria. Life here is intimately connected to the lake, with fishing being the predominant livelihood. The district is known for its islands, including Lolui and Sigulu, which present unique service delivery challenges.
Geographical & Demographic Profile
The district covers about 567 square kilometers, much of it open water and islands. It borders Lake Victoria to the South and West, Bugiri District to the North, and Kenya to the East. The population is around 250,000, with the majority belonging to the Basoga and Banyole tribes. Languages are Lusoga, Lunyole, and English.
Economic Activities
Fishing is the primary economic activity, with Nile perch and tilapia as the main catches. Small-scale agriculture (cassava, sweet potatoes, maize) supports subsistence. The islands engage in fishing and minimal agriculture. There is a growing but small tourism potential around lake beaches and cultural sites.
Key Challenges
Overfishing & Depleting Stocks
Poor Infrastructure
Low Education Levels
Water Transport Risks
Limited Alternative Livelihoods
Our Intervention Programs
Sustainable Fishing Project: Training in recommended fishing gears, fish handling, and formation of Beach Management Units (BMUs).
Island Community Support: Construction of rainwater harvesting tanks and ventilated improved pit latrines (VIPs) on Lolui and Sigulu islands.
Girl Child Education Fund: Providing scholarships, sanitary pads, and mentorship to keep girls in school.
Safe Transport Initiative: Distribution of life jackets and training for boat operators in safety measures.
Diversified Livelihoods: Training in aquaculture (cage fishing), apiary (beekeeping), and small livestock rearing.
Namayingo: Digital Waves on Lake Victoria’s Shores
In Namayingo, digital skills are becoming as vital as the lake that sustains the community. From fishing communities using apps to track catches, to youth launching online ventures, we are connecting traditional livelihoods with new technologies. Here, innovation rises with the tide—transforming local talents into global opportunities, and ensuring that no community is left behind in the digital current.
